Producers Tom Cruise and Jerry Bruckheimer have convinced Paramount Pictures to amp up the promotion machine to full throttle as the May 27 theatrical debut on "Top Gun: Maverick."
The movie will have its official world premiere on Wednesday, May 4, 2022, in San Diego, and the studio has set up a live red carpet streaming event that will air on YouTube. MTV, which shares a parent company with Paramount, will produce the coverage, with MTV News correspondents Josh Horowitz, Dometi Pongo and Simone Boyce handling interviews and news reports from the red carpet.
The coverage will start at 6:30 p.m. ET/3:30 p.m. PT, and Paramount will redirect viewers from the company's more than 150 YouTube channels to join the livestream once their current video ends.
Cruise ("Maverick"), Miles Teller ("Rooster"), Jennifer Connelly ("Penny Benjamin"), Jon Hamm ("Cyclone"), Glen Powell ("Hangman") and Lewis Pullman ("Bob") are all expected to attend the screening alongside Bruckheimer and director Joe Kosinski.
This will be one of the few times Cruise will speak to the media during "Top Gun: Maverick" promotion, so tune in if you're interested in hearing what the (fictional) Navy icon has to say about the movie.
The "Top Gun" sequel, originally scheduled for release in summer 2020, has been one of the most-delayed movies of the pandemic era. In their interviews leading up to this now set-in-stone release, the producers and cast have insisted that audiences need to see their movie on a giant screen, and early reactions on social media suggest that the film was worth the wait.
"Top Gun: Maverick" will premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in France on May 18, 2022, and posts on Instagram from Jay Ellis ("Payback") make it look like the cast is gearing up for some serious promotion in a customized "Top Gun: Maverick" private jet between now and the end of the month.
