"Saving Private Ryan" was released twenty years ago this summer and it's a sad fact that "Shakespeare in Love" won the Best Picture Oscar that "Ryan" deserved. Stephen Spielberg did win Best Director (mostly for the incredible Omaha Beach landing scene at the beginning of the movie) but it was still the worst Academy decision since "The Greatest Show on Earth" upset "High Noon" back in 1953.
Fortunately, "Saving Private Ryan" is now recognized as a classic war movie and it's gotten a new 4K Ultra HD/Blu-ray combo pack release in recognition of the 20th anniversary of its release.
We've got a clip from the newly remastered movie, the "Everybody's got a mother" discussion that happens when the unit sets out on their French countryside search for Private James Ryan.
The 4K transfer and new Dolby Atmos soundtrack are both spectacular. If you've invested in the latest home video technology, this is absolutely one of the movies you want in your collection. It's perfect for showing off your gear when you want to make friends and family jealous.
There's also a Blu-ray movie disc and a Blu-ray bonus disc that features all of the additional material previously released on Blu-ray:
- An Introduction
- Looking Into the Past
- Miller and His Platoon
- Boot Camp
- Making Saving Private Ryan
- Re-Crearting Omaha Beach
- Music and Sound
- Parting Thoughts
- Into the Breach: Saving Private Ryan
- Theatrical Trailer
- Re-Release Trailer
- Shooting War
The movie is still great. It still features one of the most arresting battle scenes in movie history and it still stars Tom Hanks, Matt Damon, Edward Burns, Tom Sizemore, Ted Danson, Giovanni Ribisi, Vin Diesel, Paul Giamatti and Barry Pepper. If you have the equipment, you'll love the upgrade.
