    Welcome to Vernadsky.

This tiny building in Vernadsky, Antarctica is a Ukrainian research base located about 500 kilometres away from South America.

Here, Ukrainian scientists normally rotate every 11 months to conduct research.

But in February, as the team of 12 Ukrainians was about to go home, Russia invaded their home country.

They have now just left (on 11 April) and are on a ship to Ukraine. They're unsure how long it'll take to reach their destination. (April 12) AP
