U.S. Coast Guard at Normandy
Carrying out the Coast Guard's time-honored task of saving lives, albeit under enemy fire on a shoreline thousands of miles from home, the cutters involved in the invasion of Normandy saved more than 1,400 souls but was also one of the bloodiest days in Coast Guard history. Their involvement in the invasion's success remains an admirable record for the United States' oldest continuous sea-going service.
