80-year-old Fisherman Saved by Coast Guard
The U.S. Coast Guard medically evacuated an 80-year-old fisherman from a San Diego-based commercial sport fishing vessel after he fell and suffered multiple injuries more than 230 miles south of San Diego, Wednesday. The crew of the 93-foot Royal Star contacted the Coast Guard just before 7 p.m., Tuesday, requesting assistance for the man who fell 10 feet between decks on the vessel while fishing approximately 54 miles west of the Mexican coast. An MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew from Coast Guard Sector San Diego was launched to perform the rescue and a C-130 Hercules aircraft crew from Coast Guard Air Station Sacramento launched to assist the helicopter crew. After conducting the hoist the helicopter crew transported the man back to Sector San Diego at 1:20 a.m., where they were met by emergency medical personnel for transport to the hospital and further treatment.
