The last few years have seen a growing national focus on the quality of military family housing and barracks. The increased scrutiny by the media, advocacy groups and Congress is well-warranted: Recurring issues include pest infestations, toxic mold, and sewage and ventilation problems, among others.
After years of complaints from U.S. service members and their families, the wheels of progress are slowly turning. Lawmakers are now floating ideas for desperately needed renovations, new construction and even privatization to fix seriously deficient barracks plagued with health and safety hazards.
Of course, no single product will make an uninhabitable building comfortable or even tolerable. That said, for decent housing, we know that service members have ingenious ways of leveling up the places they live.
That's where you come in. We're looking for those commercial off-the-shelf items that are must-haves for turning a barracks room into home.
Tell us: What's one item that makes living in the barracks more comfortable? Send us your responses using the form below, and we'll publish your thoughts for a follow-up article sharing insights from the Military.com community.
