Lando Calrissian Will Finally Get His Own 'Star Wars' Series on Disney+

Han Solo's origin story might have been a box office flop, but the "Star Wars" franchise is far from finished with the early lives of its most popular characters. The best part of 2018's "Solo: A Star Wars Story" was easily Donald Glover's depiction of a young Lando Calrissian, so it makes sense to finally flesh out the character's own backstory.

Disney apparently thought so. The company announced in December 2020 that Lando would get his own show and, although many of us made promises we didn't keep during the pandemic, Disney is continuing with the project. The Hollywood Reporter confirmed that Glover will also write the show alongside his brother, Stephen Glover.

Along with his music career under the name Childish Gambino, Donald Glover is a prolific writer. His credits include episodes of the Emmy-winning comedy "30 Rock," the series "Atlanta" and Amazon Prime Video's new series, "Swarm." On top of starring in "Atlanta," he also appeared on the NBC series "Community" and was the voice of Simba in the recent live-action remake of "The Lion King."

Lando Calrissian first appeared in "The Empire Strikes Back," played by actor Billy Dee Williams. Williams reprised the role in "Return of the Jedi" and again in 2019's "The Rise of Skywalker." He also voiced Lando in the Lego versions of the Star Wars Saga and in "Star Wars" video games.

What we've seen of the character in "Star Wars" movies is a small part of his backstory. He began his professional career as a smuggler and gambler, which is how he lost the Millennium Falcon to Han Solo during a game of Sabacc. His smuggling record against the Galactic Empire was as hit-or-miss as his gambling, so he eventually gave up that life and began a mining operation.

Disney inked the deal with Glover to write and produce the new Lando series before the ongoing writers' strike, so few (if any) developments have been made. Lando's story will begin on Disney+ sometime in the near future.
