Women are different from men. Depending on where you stand, those are either fightin' words or patently obvious. As the transition master coach for Military.com's veteran employment project, I stand in the "patently obvious" department -- especially when it comes to military transition.

Logically, there should not be a big difference. Female military members and male military members do the same jobs for the same pay. Male and female veterans have the same access to the same transition programs. Recruiters are especially hungry to employ female veterans and reach out to me frequently.

Female Veterans Find a Difference on the Civilian Job Market

Yet female veterans get a different outcome on the job market than male veterans. Female veterans tell me they don't experience the job market like their male peers. It is harder and takes longer. The research backs them up.

  • Female veterans are more likely to report their transition was difficult or very difficult.
  • If they don't get a job in the first three months following separation, it takes female veterans longer than male veterans to find a job.
  • Female veterans earn lower wages once they transition, compared to male veterans, and they request lower salaries.
  • Female veterans are less likely to believe that people in the community respect their military service.
  • Female veterans are more likely to leave military service before they planned or wished to, primarily because of personal health problems or responsibilities for children.
  • Female veterans are less likely to end up in managerial roles.
  • Female veterans are more likely than male veterans to be adversely affected by access to child care

How can female veterans and spouses land jobs with a 6-figure income?

Honestly, those are the fightin' words. So many employers want to hire female veterans and spouses right now for their leadership skills, work presence and job skills. But how can female veterans overcome some of these invisible, unfathomable barriers to employment and land those jobs, especially the kind with a six-figure income?

Master Class: Conquer and Connect: Employment Strategies for Female Veterans and Spouses

It takes a network. That is why we put together our newest transition master class exclusively for female veterans and female spouses (who often have the same kind of obstacles on the job market). In our 60-minute master class, "Connect and Conquer: Employment Strategies for Female Veterans and Spouses," on Wednesday, July 24, at 4 p.m. Eastern, you will learn:

  1. How your hidden network is bigger than you know and how it can help you identify the best-paying jobs you want most, especially the kind with a six-figure income.
  2. Which programs employers are specifically looking for you. Is it worth it to come in through the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) door?
  3. The interview traps and resume snafus that catch female veterans more often than anything else.
  4. How to bring your whole self to the job to find the happiness you so richly deserve.
