When mailing things, cost counts. This is especially true if you are sending lots of care packages to a deployed service member, or mailing stuff to a family stationed overseas. Sometimes, the United States Postal Service (USPS) flat rate boxes are the most convenient and economical way to send things, but most post offices carry only a few sizes of flat rate boxes.
But did you know that you can order different sized flat rate boxes? They can be ordered online, and they're free (just like other flat rate priority mail boxes). The only bummer is that some of them have to be ordered in quantities of 25, but extras can be returned to your local post office.
The large flat rate board game box has inside dimensions 23-11/16" x 11-3/4" x 3", compared with a large flat rate regular box with inside dimensions of 12" X 12" X 5 1/2". The game board box has almost 100 cubic inches more than the regular flat rate box, yet it mails for the same flat rate price of $17.45, or $15.45 if being mailed to an APO or FPO address.
Medium flat rate boxes also come in two sizes: 11" x 8-1/2" x 5-1/2" (approximately 528 cubic inches) and 11-7/8" x 3-3/8" x 13-5/8 (approximately 674 cubic inches). Both medium flat rate boxes cost $12.35 to mail.
Flat rate boxes aren't always the cheapest way to mail things, but they are great for heavy items. That little bit of extra space in a game box might save you some money, so consider it.
