We're in the middle of W-2 and 1099R season, and documents are being released almost daily. Here is the chart of the 2013 tax documents release schedule for military folks:
These are the dates that the W-2s and 1099Rs will be available using the MyPay system. If you don’t have MyPay online access, take a bit of time today to set up your account so that you’ll be able to get to your tax documents when they become available.
Please be sure to note that last two dates, which is when 1099-INTs will be issued for Savings Deposit Program money and W-2s for Personally Procured Moves (former called Do It Yourself/DITY moves). Forgetting these other tax statements can be a hassle.
Due to sequestration, the IRS isn't even ready to start processing income tax returns until 30 January 2014. It is always better to wait until you have all your documents, including any amended documents, before filing. I know it is enticing to file early, especially if your taxes are simple and you are expecting a refund. However, the pain of filing an amended return is just not worth it! It is great to go ahead and get prepared with all your other papers and figures. That way you can just plug in the W-2 figures when the documents are actually issued.
Best wishes for a smooth and simple tax filing season.
