Water damage can be expensive — not to mention messy. Even a small leak can damage your home, lead to mold and send your water bill skyrocketing. To prevent water damage, follow these tips:
- Look under sinks for drips or other red flags, such as stains on the floor or corroded fittings. Check for leaks from hoses and supply lines to toilets, washing machines and other appliances.
- Consider replacing burst-prone rubber hoses with steel-braided hoses or using a water alarm (logon is required) to detect leaks early.
- Make sure drain-pipe and supply-line connections are secure. This simple step often can prevent leaks.
- Inspect the floor under and around your water heater for any signs of leaks, and keep an eye out for rust, especially at the bottom of the heater.
- Check gutters to make sure they're in good condition and free of debris so that snow, ice and water can drain properly and help preserve your roof.
