Veterans Day is viewed by countless Americans as a time to thank veterans for their military service, but for many veterans, serving others doesn't end when they separate from the armed forces.

Former service members play a crucial role in making our communities stronger and safer places to live. Veterans Day is a day to celebrate our nation's veterans for what they do every day, not just for what they've done.

This Veterans Day, the #ThanksToVeterans campaign kicked off by giving 10 deserving veterans a new house paid in full. The group includes members of the Army, Navy and Marine Corps, with houses being given away across the country, including California, Georgia, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina and Wisconsin. Six of these veterans were surprised in their hometowns.

Among those who received this Veterans Day surprise:

  • A single father who, with his three daughters, created and delivered food baskets to those in need throughout the pandemic.
  • A health and safety officer at a veterans retirement community who volunteers his time teaching self-defense.
  • A widow and mother of three who is active in school committees and team manager of her son's football team.

These veterans truly represent the veteran community as a whole. In big cities, small towns and everywhere in between, veterans are taking an active role in improving their neighborhoods.

The numbers speak for themselves. A slew of recent reports and surveys show veterans are more likely to volunteer and actively participate in the life of their communities.

"We're honoring veterans not only for their service while in uniform, but for their lifetime of service and all the ways they make communities better," said Pam Swan, vice president of military relations for Veterans United Home Loans and a military spouse. "Our '#ThanksToVeterans' campaign underscores the commitment veterans demonstrate daily as local leaders, dedicated volunteers and exemplary neighbors. And what better way to thank these deserving individuals than by giving them houses of their very own in the communities they call home?"
