Sailors interested in applying to be a member of the U.S. Navy Ceremonial Guard are now able to apply as early as 15 months before their projected rotation date. Those applying must meet strict standards including no driving under the influence/driving while intoxicated convictions within last 5 years, no excessive debt, and no tattoos that show in a short sleeve uniform. Males must be a minimum of six feet tall, and females must be a minimum of five feet, ten inches tall. Additional requirements include marching, drilling and prolonged standing as swell as superior military bearing and no unusual distinguishing features. The Ceremonial Guard was established in 1931 and is the official ceremonial unit of the Navy. The primary mission of the Ceremonial Guard is to "represent the service in presidential, Joint Armed Forces, Navy, and public ceremonies in the capital of our nation and around the world." Members of the unit play a part in high profile events such as inaugurations, foreign official ceremonies, and services for those buried at Arlington National Cemetery.
