Soldiers and civilians at White Sands Missile Range, New Mexico, marked the anniversary of World War II's 1942 Bataan Death March with a desert walk involving nearly 9,000 participants. To start the memorial trek, troops heard from three survivors of the historic march: Valdemar De Herrera, Paul Kerchum and Ben Skardon. Then, they sounded a symbolic roll call, according to a recent release. The marchers traveled from all 50 states and 12 countries. The event honored the 750,000 U.S. and Filipino troops who were marched brutally for days through Philippine jungles to prison camps after the U.S. surrendered the Bataan Peninsula to the Japanese during the war.
