The Navy plans to start using the public safety broadband network FirstNet across installations and special areas in the U.S., according to a Navy announcement released Feb. 12. First established by Congress in 2012, the First Responder Network Authority allows communication between first responders and emergency personnel over a national public safety broadband network, according to a release. FirstNet subscriptions, devices and services must be procured for each base through the General Services Administration. Current public safety communications systems will continue to operate as the FirstNet system is established. For more information, view this Navy message.
