The U.S. Navy has announced significant changes to the nuclear enlisted sea shore flow (SSF) policy. The changes include: (1) decrease the first sea tour from 54 months to 48 months; (2) one year from now, change the second sea tour to 40 months for all enlisted pay grades: (3) change the nominal shore duty tour length from 36 months to 40 months with some exceptions; (4) implement two "career milestone gates," which serve as a distribution mechanism to facilitate Sailors rotating back to the second and third sea duty periods at the correct time in their career; and (5) reduce the requirement to earn a supervisory Navy Enlisted Classification (NEC) from six years of active-duty service to four years. A downloadable graphic with the SSF modifications is available on the Nuclear Command Career Counselor Toolbox web page. Commands are encouraged to print and post it for Sailors to review.
