The U.S. Navy is joining the nation in celebrating American Indians and Native Alaskans during National American Indian and Native Alaskan Heritage Month throughout the month of November. Navy commands are encouraged to celebrate and reflect on the theme 'Standing Together.' Since 1994, the observance month has recognized American Indians and Native Alaskans for their respect of natural resources and the Earth, having served with valor in our nation's conflicts. Today, there are a total of 566 Federally recognized tribes in the United States.
