A Navy request for proposals was issued this month for design and construction of the first 10 ships in the guided missile frigate program, known as FFG(X). The announcement launches the competition between shipbuilders, with a contract expected to be awarded in fiscal year 2020. The guided missile frigate is expected to complement and augment the capabilities of the current fleet of 33 Littoral Combat Ships. Both ships are smaller in size and designed to operate in blue water and littoral environments. The Navy's plan is to have 20 FFG(X) ships in the program. Read more at Navy.mil.
