Here are several signs to look for in infants or children to determine if they are having trouble hearing: (1) lack of attention to sounds (birth – 1 year); (2) does not respond when you call their name (7 months – 1 year); (3) does not follow simple directions (1 – 2 years); and (4) shows delays in speech and language development (birth – 3 years). TRICARE covers newborn hearing screenings as part of well-child care. If you find that you may need a hearing aid, TRICARE coverage is limited to active duty family members with specific hearing factors. If you are not active duty, you may be able to receive help from other government programs. For more information, visit the TRICARE Hearing Aids webpage. For a comprehensive list of signs of hearing loss in adults and children, visit ASHA's Identify the Signs webpage.
