A new robot is being tested by the Army to help soldiers identify and dispose of chemical and explosive hazards without risking their own health or safety. The Man Transportable Robotic System Increment II has "modular mission payloads" that can be customized to support engineers, Special Operations forces, Explosive Ordnance Disposal troops and Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (CBRN) troops, according to a recent release. Units testing the new system include the III Corps, the 20th CBRNE Command and elements from 36th Engineer Brigade, 48th CBRN Brigade and 79th EOD Battalion at Fort Hood, Texas. Testing will occur in realistic environments, day and night, using MTRS in place of the Army's current TALON II robots. MTRS will be used to locate, identify and neutralize simulated explosive hazards in a wide variety of tactical situations. Soldier feedback will ultimately be sent to Army Test and Evaluation Command for consideration. Read more at Army.mil.
