The future aircraft carrier John F. Kennedy, currently under construction, recently reached a milestone with the placement of the island house. The island weighs 588 tons, is 56 feet long and 33 feet wide, and will serve as the command center for flight deck operations — housing the navigation bridge, primary flight control, radar and other systems. The Kennedy will be the second carrier in the Gerald R. Ford ship class. Installation of the island house marks the final phases of structural work on the ship. Read more at Navy.mil.
