The computer crime investigative unit of U.S. Army Criminal Investigation Command (CID) is issuing a warning to members of the Army community to beware of social media scams involving the fraudulent impersonation of service members aimed at bilking people for cash. Cybercriminals use soldiers’ actual identities and a mix of real and fake information to perpetrate “romance scams” as well as sales and advance fee schemes, according to a recent news release. Scammers have been known to use the identities of senior officers as well as enlisted troops, contractors and civilians, officials said. Scammers are now using faked Common Access Cards, a military ID, to give their claims more authenticity. Army CID asks that community members visit the CID website for more details and information.
