The Army recently completed a successful test of its ability to redirect a missile while it's in flight, according to a service news release. The test took place Aug. 28 at Naval Air Weapons Station China Lake, in California's Mojave Desert, and employed a Grey Eagle unmanned aircraft along with Army smart sensors and artificial intelligence capabilities. In the experiment, called A3I, for Architecture, Automation, Autonomy and Interfaces, a soldier in the back of an MH-47 Chinook helicopter used an iPad to direct the Grey Eagle, firing a GBU-69 small glide munition from the drone. As the munition neared its target, operators on the ground were able to take over control and redirect it to a new target, which was successfully destroyed. Read more at Army.mil.
