Snipers with the Army's 82nd Airborne Division recently got to test the performance of a new combat sniper rifle with a unique challenge: airborne insertion. The Compact Semi-Automatic Sniper System, or CSASS, could be the Army's newest sniper system if all goes well, according to a recent service release. The weapon is smaller and better-suited to operating in urban environments and in and around armored vehicles than current long-barreled sniper rifles. In recent tests, soldiers with the 82nd airborne assessed the ability of the rifle's primary optic to stay zeroed following airborne insertion and the shock associated with jumps.
