As the Army extends entry-level infantry training to increase soldiers' discipline and professionalism, the service is launching a new infantry training battalion to assist with the demand. The 3rd Battalion, 47th Infantry Regiment, was established March 1 with a formal ceremony at Fort Benning, Georgia, becoming part of the Maneuver Center of Excellence's 198th Infantry Brigade, which provides Infantry One Station Unit Training, or OSUT, for infantry soldiers, according to a recent release. The 3rd Battalion was created in 1999 but inactivated in 2013. The Army recently moved to increase the length of Infantry OSUT from 14 to 22 weeks, allowing trainees to spend more time on weapons familiarization and longer training in the field. Ultimately, the 198th Infantry Brigade will add three new battalions to accommodate demand; the 3rd Battalion, 47th Infantry, is the first to stand up. Read more at Army.mil.
