If you're a resident of Louisiana and serving on active duty in the military, you may be eligible for an additional 25% discount on your auto insurance, thanks to a little-known law.
Louisiana Statute RS 22:1482 and State Title 37, Part 13, Chapter 95, Regulation 81 dictates that active-duty members and their dependents can get this significant discount if they meet certain requirements.
Here are the details:
- You must be a Louisiana resident
- You have to be on full-time active duty
- You need to buy your insurance in Louisiana
- You must meet the residency requirements
Here are the residency requirements:
- You must live in Louisiana
- If stationed outside of Louisiana, you must be single, OR your family must live in Louisiana
This discount applies to you, your spouse and your dependent children who are on the same policy as yourself.
To apply for the discount, you should ask your insurance agent, or call the Louisiana Department of Insurance at 800-259-5300. You have to fill out a form and have it signed by your commanding officer. Once you have the form, you should submit it to your insurance company, and (as always) keep a copy for yourself.
